Background of the Study
With the rapid increase in the number of devices connected to the internet, the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses has become a significant concern. IPv6, the successor to IPv4, offers a virtually unlimited pool of IP addresses, addressing the limitations of IPv4 in terms of scalability and performance (Adewale et al., 2024). Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, like many Nigerian universities, is facing the challenge of network address exhaustion as the number of connected devices increases. As a result, the university must transition to IPv6 to ensure the continued growth and stability of its network.
IPv6 offers several benefits, including enhanced security, better performance, and support for emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) (Usman & Yahaya, 2023). However, the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 can be complex, involving changes to network infrastructure, address allocation, and the configuration of devices and services (Olaniyi & Musa, 2023). This study aims to implement an IPv6 addressing scheme at Federal University, Kashere, and assess its impact on the university’s network performance, security, and scalability.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Kashere, currently operates on IPv4 addressing, which is rapidly reaching its limits due to the growing number of connected devices and services. The university faces challenges related to IP address exhaustion, inefficient network management, and the inability to support emerging technologies. There is a need for a comprehensive transition to IPv6 that will provide the university with sufficient IP addresses, better security features, and improved network performance.
Objectives of the Study
To implement an IPv6 addressing scheme for the Federal University, Kashere network.
To evaluate the impact of the IPv6 implementation on network performance, scalability, and security.
To recommend strategies for a smooth transition to IPv6 for the university’s network infrastructure.
Research Questions
How can an IPv6 addressing scheme be implemented at Federal University, Kashere, to replace IPv4?
What are the benefits and challenges associated with the implementation of IPv6 at Federal University, Kashere?
How does the implementation of IPv6 impact network performance, scalability, and security at the university?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of IPv6 addressing at the main campus of Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State. The study will evaluate the effects of IPv6 implementation on network performance and security but may face limitations due to the complexity of network infrastructure changes, compatibility issues with existing systems, and the need for training staff and users on the new addressing scheme.
Definitions of Terms
IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6): The latest version of the Internet Protocol that offers a larger address space and improved features compared to IPv4.
IPv4: The previous version of the Internet Protocol, which has a limited address space and is being phased out in favor of IPv6.
IP Address: A unique identifier assigned to each device on a network to facilitate communication.
Internet of Things (IoT): The interconnection of everyday devices through the internet to enable data sharing and automation.
